5/8/12 - Dog Gone

Sunday, when we went to CHSP, Bentley fell in the lake.  He didn’t “go” into the lake to go swimming.   He literally “fell” in.  My poor Bentley.   LOL.

Ducks were flying in as evening approached, presumably to roost in the tall plants in the cove.  Does anyone know what the plants are?  I was told that the staff member at CHSP that can answer that question is on vacation right now.

Anyway, I digress.... back to the story....

Bentley loves birds.  He always has.  I think even more so than his human momma.  For example, we go to PetSmart and the 1st thing he wants to do is visit the birds.  He sits and talks to them for as long as I will let him.  While on hikes, he always runs after them - not to chase them, but to be with them.  He can never quite figure out why they fly off.

And, more than once, he has taken a leap into the air as if he wants to fly away with them.  That's what happened at the lake.  The ducks flew and he tried to go with them.  Plop.  He landed in the lake.

The only problem was that there is a 3-4 foot retaining wall there.  It's not apparent in the picture but he couldn't get back up to dry land.  I immediately headed that way but by the time I made it to the wall, Nonni had already jumped in the lake 2 or 3 times and was climbing back up the wall each time with no problem because she is so much bigger than Bentley.  I honestly think she was trying to show Bentley what to do.  Poor little guy.  He was giving it his all, but there was just no way he was going to get out of that area without help.

So I laid down on the grass, leaned over the wall and reached as far as I could.  I could barely reach Bentley's collar with my fingertips.  It was not enough to get him out of the water.  He was dog-paddling but I could tell he was about to get frantic.  Fortunately he listened to me and tried one more time to climb the wall.  The leverage was enough for me to grab his collar with both hands and help him up.

While doing so I realized that Nonni had laid down beside me and was peering over the wall as well.  Ahhhh, she's such a good sister.  There was no time to get a picture of any of it, but here's a picture I took of the ducks just before Bentley tried to fly.

Nonni and Bentley both enjoyed the whole thing because they got extra treats and baths when we got back to the apartment.  :)

  2. I'm so glad that Bently is safe. It is funny after the fact. Angel is the same way with birds, especially at Pet Smart.

    1. @ Susan - isn't that funny? I wonder what it is about birds that attracts them so? I haven't seen other dogs respond that way. Can't wait to meet Angel. Yes, I'm glad Bentley is safe too. HugZ!

  3. poor Bentley, poor you, i would have been frantic myself trying to get him out. Jake fell in our pool a couple years ago, in the deep end where there are no steps. he was trying to climb out and i could not get him out because he weighs 48 pounds, it took bob and me to pull him out he would not swim to the steps at the other end, he was in panic mode. we were going to get him used to the steps but he panics when he gets in and since i dont want to dry off dogs 5 times a day, we just let the two of them not get in. our other dog Max lived in the pool and during the summer every time he went out, he would get in the pool and lay in DIRT and have to be hosed off and dried to come in the house. you should start a book called perils of Debra and her dogs.

    1. @ Sandra - aren't they each adorable with their different personalities. Too funny! Bentley can't stand to be clean. His favorite thing is to go for a swim (but not this way, LOL) and then roll in the dirt. If it cakes on, he's even happier. :)

"The Perils of Debra and Her Dogs" -- I like it! LOL.
